Weekend

After so many weekends of having absolutely nothing to do, I was grateful to have a few things to do this past weekend. As is the way with me, it seems that when it rains, it pours. Friday night was [livejournal.com profile] fuzzy_gizmo's housewarming party. His house is cool, and I forsee many more parties to come. =)

Saturday morning I went to the running club, as usual. Except this time, there was almost no one there. Was everyone on vacation this week, or just being lazy? I can see it being like that last weekend over the holiday, but who knows what was going on Saturday. I also went down to the harbor that afternoon (for like, the fifth time in a week) to check out some arts & crafts fair, but it was really small and not very exciting. I did finally get around to cooking this big salmon filet that Dad had given me, and it turned out very well. Then [livejournal.com profile] fuzzy_gizmo called me to ask if I was interested in going to this karaoke party at the house of some of his co-workers. Now that was an interesting time (no, I didn't sing), but as I mentioned to him on the way back, it reminded me why I gave up the hard-partying college lifestyle before I even graduated college. So thanks for two fun times, fuzzy!

Sunday morning I finally made it down to the Baltimore Farmer's Market, which was huge and really neat. Lots of stuff available, but since I can't keep produce around and use it up before it goes bad, I didn't buy much of anything. I also went to this really lame coffeehouse thing, then tried to make chili for the week, but all my produce had turned the wrong colors.

So, my random wonder for the morning: I've been making my French-press coffee the same way for the better part of six months now. Why does it suddenly seem more watery than before?

I assume that you haven't done something obvious like change the amount of water you use to make the coffee. Has something about your coffee or brewing process changed recently? Are you using a different kind of beans? A different grind? What about the water you use to make the coffee -- has it changed somehow (different faucet, home vs. work, hard vs. soft water)? Is the water hot enough? Are you letting the coffee steep for 4-5 minutes? I let mine sit for about 5 minutes and it comes out fine.

One other change I made a few months back was that I got a larger coffee mug and started pouring out all of the coffee when it was ready, instead of drinking two smaller mugs, one after another. The second cup always came out more watery than the first. By pouring out all 12 ounces of coffee at once, it preserves the uniformity of taste and consistency. If you're going to do that, you might want to get a mug with a lid so your coffee doesn't get cold.

It's possible they installed some kind of water softener or something funky, because I know the dentists downstairs were messing with the water at one point. I usually pour all of it out at once anyway. It doesn't taste watery or anything, but the consistency just "feels" a little different recently.
